CRATER LAKE'S YEAR-ROUND RIM VILLAGE CAFÉ & GIFT SHOP SET TO OPEN JULY 3

For Immediate Release

CRATER LAKE NATIONAL PARK, Ore. - June 28, 2007 - Crater Lake National Park's new year-round Rim Village Café & Gift Shop will open July 3, 2007 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Xanterra Parks & Resorts, operator of lodging, dining and retail operations in the park, was involved with the renovation and design of the 3,700-square-foot facility located in a National Park Service building constructed in 1972.

The facility will be Xanterra's only Crater Lake operation open year-round. A snow tunnel through the basement of the building to the parking lot will make access easier for winter visitors. From October to June, the park receives an average of more than 500 inches of snow. The 71-room Crater Lake Lodge is open mid-May through mid-October, and the Mazama Village Motor Inn is open June through early October.

The Rim Village Café will feature "Grab and Go" items including hot soups, sandwiches, salads and snacks. The 1,500-square-foot café will have a seating capacity of 36 inside and 48 on an adjoining patio. The 2,200-square-foot retail area will feature a hiking theme with aisles resembling a hiking trail that weaves its way through the shop. The trail is made of various tiles including some that look like local rock.

Xanterra was the project manager for the interior renovation of the gift shop and the café. The architectural firm was Skelton, Straus & Seibert of Medford, Ore., and the contractor was T. Gerding of Corvallis, Ore.

The 183,224-acre Crater Lake National Park was established in 1902 as the country's fifth national park. The park was created to protect Crater Lake, located in the caldera that resulted from the collapse of a volcano. At 1,947 feet, Crater Lake is the deepest and clearest lake in the country. It is surrounded by lava walls 500 to 2,000 feet high.
